ExpressVPN Boosts Speed with Lightway Turbo and Enhanced OpenVPN Features

by Shelley

ExpressVPN continues to innovate with the launch of Lightway Turbo, a feature that boosts the speed and bandwidth of its existing Lightway protocol. The update promises faster internet speeds without compromising performance, marking another significant improvement for the popular VPN service.

ExpressVPN is also enhancing OpenVPN, a protocol known for its reliability, to improve speed and efficiency. The combination of these updates solidifies ExpressVPN’s position as one of the fastest VPN services available.

Faster Speeds with Lightway Turbo

Lightway Turbo is designed to deliver faster VPN connections by leveraging multiple pathways. The new feature establishes several tunnels to VPN servers, enabling multiple Lightway connections to run concurrently. This boosts bandwidth and improves data transmission, resulting in a smoother and faster browsing experience for users.

Internal testing by ExpressVPN showed an impressive speed increase of up to 330%. Pete Membrey, Chief Research Officer at ExpressVPN, explained, “With Lightway Turbo, we’ve created a solution that enhances bandwidth without adding latency, providing users with lightning-fast speeds and real-time performance.”

ExpressVPN has also rewritten the Lightway protocol in Rust, which not only improves performance but also strengthens security. The app now includes post-quantum encryption, ensuring user data remains protected with the highest standards.

OpenVPN Gets an Upgrade

In addition to Lightway Turbo, ExpressVPN is upgrading its veteran OpenVPN protocol. Although typically slower than newer protocols like WireGuard, OpenVPN will now benefit from data channel offload (DCO). This technology allows OpenVPN to process multiple data streams at once, improving the speed and efficiency of network traffic handling.

“Many of our users still rely on OpenVPN, so we are committed to enhancing their experience,” said Himmat Bains, head of desktop apps at ExpressVPN. “With DCO, we’ve seen performance improvements of up to 2,000% on UDP traffic. It’s a complete transformation for OpenVPN.”

Pricing and Availability

ExpressVPN is available for $4.99 per month with a two-year plan, which includes four additional months for free and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The service can secure up to eight devices on one plan, making it an affordable option for users seeking privacy and security across multiple platforms.

Lightway Turbo is currently available for Lightway UDP on the Windows v12 app, with plans to expand to other platforms soon. The DCO feature for OpenVPN is also exclusive to the Windows v12 app for now.
