Windscribe Founder Acquitted in Landmark VPN Privacy Case

by Shelley

Yegor Sak, founder of the global VPN service Windscribe, has been fully acquitted by a court in Athens, Greece, ending a two-year legal case in which he was personally charged over an alleged cyber offense linked to the company’s infrastructure.

The case stemmed from a Windscribe server located in Finland, which was allegedly used to access a system in Greece without authorization. Greek authorities, working with INTERPOL, traced the activity to a Windscribe IP address. Instead of requesting data through legal channels or engaging with the company directly, authorities took the unusual step of pressing criminal charges against Sak himself.

“This was not just about me,” Sak said after the ruling. “It was about defining the legal boundaries for companies that provide privacy infrastructure. We don’t log user activity, so we simply can’t provide what we don’t have.”

The Greek court dismissed all charges on April 11, 2025, citing a lack of evidence linking either Sak or Windscribe to any illegal activity.

A Precedent with Global Implications

The case unfolded amid growing global scrutiny of privacy-focused tech services. Typically, law enforcement agencies issue subpoenas to VPN providers in cases involving suspected criminal activity. Windscribe, which follows a strict no-logs policy, routinely responds that it cannot provide data it does not collect — a response that is usually accepted.

This case broke from that norm. Authorities obtained the name “Yegor Sak” from a data center in Finland but did not reach out to Windscribe. Instead, Sak first became aware of the investigation after receiving a legal summons.

“This sets a troubling precedent,” said Sak. “If it had gone the other way, it could have made server owners personally responsible for the anonymous actions of users. That would be a dangerous path for privacy technology.”
